AJung Moon is an experimental roboticist specializing in ethics and responsible design of interactive robots and AI systems. As an Assistant Professor at McGill, she directs the Responsible Autonomy & Intelligent System Ethics (RAISE) lab at the University. This means that she not only works on the cool tech behind autonomous systems but also studies the behavior of and implications to the people interacting with the technologies.

Prior to joining McGill, she served as Senior Advisor for the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation, founder and CEO of an AI ethics consultancy, and Director of the Open Roboethics Institute. Outside the office, you’ll find her indoor gardening, crocheting or being a foodie.

Jimin Rhim

Jimin Rhim is a postdoctoral research fellow at the McGill Responsible Autonomy & Intelligent System Ethics (RAISE) lab. Her research interests include human-robot interaction, AI and robot ethics, positive technology, and cyberpsychology. As a human-centered roboticist, her research goal is to address the complete life cycle of robotics with social and ethical impacts on society. This process includes uncovering unforeseen socio-technological issues towards the deployment and regulations to shape sustainable adoption of robots and intelligent systems into society. She investigates both conceptual and computational challenges in robotic acceptance, trust, and safety by using interdisciplinary research approaches to bridge the gap between theory and practical implementation. Further, her doctoral thesis was selected as one of the top research highlights of KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in 2019 in the Information Technology sector. 

Shalaleh Rismani

Shalaleh is pursuing her Ph.D. student in electrical and computer engineering as a member of the RAISE lab at McGill University. She completed her masters in biomedical engineering and bachelors in mechanical engineering (mechatronics specialization) at the University of British Columbia. Since her introduction to IDEO’s human-centered design process at Shad Valley, Shalaleh has been fascinated by how good and bad design impacts human lives. Her current research interest is to understand how we can quantify the ethical and social impacts of automated decision support systems used in our society. Shalaleh is also co-director of the Open Roboethics Institute. In her spare time, Shalaleh loves to dance, practice Muaythai, run, listen to podcasts, and re-watch the Harry Potter series.

Adam Sigal

Adam Sigal completed his bachelor’s of Computer Science at Université de Montréal in 2019, and began his master’s at McGill / Mila in 2020 under the supervision of AJung Moon. His research interests lie at the intersection of AI, robotics, and ethics.

Cheng Lin

Cheng is entering her final year of electrical engineering at McGill University. She is interested in human-robot interaction, AI ethics, and human-computer interaction. In her spare time, she enjoys figure skating, climbing, music, and reading.

Anthony Dumais is an upcoming third-year student at McGill University studying Cognitive Science. As a member of the RAISE lab, he is conducting research in order to understand how AI technologies will impact society and find possible ways to reduce risk.

Vivian Qiang (she/her) is an upcoming fourth-year student at McGill University studying Cognitive Science and Social Studies of Medicine. She is interested in digital inclusion and hopes to address equity issues that may emerge in the development and deployment of AI-powered products. Specifically, Vivian is dedicated to understanding the impact of AI on intersectional experiences in the domain of healthcare and health technology.

Jake Chanenson (they/he) is a rising senior at Swarthmore College studying Computer Science and Linguistics. Jake is most interested in the intersection of tech policy and ethics. Specifically, how autonomous or intelligent systems are shaped by tech policy in an effort to serve the common good. Outside of research, Jake is heavily involved in his college’s theatre scene.
